The book is about an old fisherman named Santiago. For eighty-four days, the aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed.But he still refused to admit defeat and full of fighting spirit. In the eighth fifteen day he caught a big marlin which has length eighteen feet, weighing fifteen hundred pounds.
F irst, the big fish takes the bait that Santiago has placed one hundred fathoms deep in the waters.Next, the old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in.Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat. Then the old man bears the strain of the line with his shoulders, back, and hands, ready to give slack should the marlin make a run.The fish swims steadily northwest until at last it tires and swims east with the current. The entire time,Santiago endures constant pain from the fishing line.Whenever the fish lunges, leaps,or makes a dash for freedom, the cord cuts him badly. Two days and nights, there is no water, no food, no weapons, no assistant, left hand cramp, he did not lose heart. After that , he finally killed the fish, tied it in the boat. But many sharks immediately come to snatch his booty. He killed them one by one, and to last used only a broken tiller as a weapon. Finally, the big fish still can not escape the fate of being eaten, and the old man back to home with a fish bone exhausted.
